Italian speeding fine: what you pay and the points you lose
Type the speed printed on your Italian fine (the verbale) and the road limit: the tool removes the tolerance, finds the article 142 band and shows the amount, points and deadlines.

Whole speeds as read by the device, with the article 345 reduction already taken off to find the band. Daytime amounts, no night surcharge.
An Italian speeding fine is worked out in four steps. First, the recorded speed is cut by the reduction in article 345 of the Highway Code regulation: 5%, with a minimum of 5 km/h. Second, the speed held is compared with the limit and the gap gives the article 142 band: up to 10 km/h over costs €42 to €173 with no points; more than 10 and up to 40 km/h over costs €173 to €694 and 3 points; more than 40 and up to 60 km/h over costs €543 to €2,170, 6 points and a one-to-three-month licence suspension; more than 60 km/h over costs €845 to €3,382, 10 points and six to twelve months of suspension. Third, between 10 pm and 7 am the amount rises by a third. Fourth, paying within 5 days of service gives 30% off the minimum, except when a suspension applies. Example: 72 km/h recorded on a 50 road becomes 67 km/h held, 17 km/h over: €173 within 60 days, €121.10 within 5, and 3 points. Amounts in force for 2026.

How an Italian speeding fine is calculated
Everything starts from the speed measured by the device. Article 345 of the Highway Code regulation requires it to be cut by 5%, with a minimum of 5 km/h, to allow for measuring error. Up to 100 km/h a flat 5 km/h comes off; above 100 km/h it is 5%, so 6.5 km/h at 130 and 7.5 km/h at 150. What remains is the speed “held” (velocità accertata), and it is the only figure that matters: it is compared with the posted limit and the gap decides the band. The calculator above does the same and also shows which recorded speed would push you into the next band.
There are four bands, all in article 142 of the Italian Highway Code. The amounts are those in force in 2026, unchanged since 2019 because the two-yearly update was suspended.
| Over the limit | Amount | Within 5 days | Points | Suspension |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| up to 10 km/h | €42 – €173 | €29.40 | 0 | no |
| 10 to 40 km/h | €173 – €694 | €121.10 | 3 | no |
| 40 to 60 km/h | €543 – €2,170 | no discount | 6 | 1 to 3 months |
| over 60 km/h | €845 – €3,382 | no discount | 10 | 6 to 12 months |
Three examples. 72 km/h recorded in town with a 50 limit: 67 km/h held, 17 over, €173 and 3 points. 145 km/h on a motorway with a 130 limit: 137.75 km/h held, 7.75 over, so the first band: €42 and no points. 98 km/h in a 50 built-up area: 93 km/h held, 43 over, €543, 6 points and a one-to-three-month suspension.

Night, new drivers, heavy vehicles: when the amount changes
Between 10 pm and 7 am speeding fines go up by one third (article 195, paragraph 2-bis). The same 17 km/h over then costs €231 instead of €173, or €161.47 if paid within 5 days. The night surcharge also covers red lights, road signs and some motorway manoeuvres.
Drivers who passed their test less than three years ago lose twice the points, as the last sentence of the article 126-bis table says: 6 instead of 3 for 10 to 40 km/h over, 20 instead of 10 above 60. In the same period article 117 bars them from going above 100 km/h on motorways and 90 km/h on main extra-urban roads, even where the sign says 130 or 110. Whether this applies to a foreign licence held for less than three years is not spelled out by the text, so the calculator lets you choose. For the heavy vehicles listed in paragraph 3 of article 142, including buses, lorries over 3.5 tonnes and vehicles towing a trailer, paragraph 11 doubles fines and suspensions.

Then there is repetition: two offences of 10 to 40 km/h over in a built-up area within a year cost €220 to €880 and a 15 to 30-day suspension. This came in with law 177 of 2024, the reform known as the new Highway Code, in force since 14 December 2024. Several offences recorded by the same body on its own roads within an hour are combined more favourably: the most serious one plus a third, when that is better for the driver (article 142, paragraph 6-ter). This matters on long tutor sections and on roads lined with cameras run by one province.
Paying within 5 days, within 60, or not paying
Article 202 gives 30% off the minimum to anyone who pays within 5 days of service. From day 6 to day 60 you pay the full minimum. Service and procedure costs, printed on the fine, are always added and never reduced. The discount does not apply when the offence carries a licence suspension, that is for anything over 40 km/h above the limit.
Letting 60 days pass without paying or appealing makes you owe half the maximum, plus costs: the fine becomes enforceable for that sum (article 203, paragraph 3). For the 10 to 40 km/h band that is €347 instead of €173: twice as much. The reduced payment and unpaid fine pages work out the exact dates from the day of service.

Appealing: the prefetto or the giudice di pace
There are two routes and you pick one. An appeal to the prefetto (the local government office) is filed within 60 days and is free; if it is rejected, the prefetto orders at least twice the minimum (article 204). An appeal to the giudice di pace (justice of the peace) is filed within 30 days, or 60 days if you live abroad (article 7 of legislative decree 150 of 2011), and carries a court fee. Either way you do not pay in the meantime, so the discount is lost. Common grounds: service after 90 days, no warning sign before the camera, wrong speed or plate on the fine, a device that was not approved or homologated. The appeal page goes through them one by one.
Italy’s national speed-camera register
Since 28 November 2025 the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport has published the list of speed-measuring devices, required by directorial decree 367 of 29 September 2025. Every body using a fixed camera, a laser gun or a tutor system had to declare the make, model, version, serial number, the approval or homologation decree and, where needed, the kilometre position and direction. The ministry describes this census as an essential step for the full legitimacy of the devices’ use (press release of 28 November 2025).
The copy read here dates from 22 February 2026: it is the latest complete copy we could download, because the ministry’s site does not answer our automated requests. It lists 3,896 devices: 1,579 mobile, 602 fixed, 409 average-speed systems, 160 used both ways and 1,146 of unstated type. 1,503 of Italy’s 7,896 comuni declare at least one; the Polizia Stradale declares 606, with no comune. The camera list and map by region pages let you look up any comune and province.

Approved or homologated: why the decree matters
Article 142, paragraph 6, treats as evidence the readings of devices that are “duly homologated”. In order 10505 of 18 April 2024 the Court of Cassation held that the approval of a model does not stand in for homologation. Since then many appeals ask for the decree quoted on the fine to be checked. The register shows the number and date of the decree declared by the body; it does not say whether that is a homologation in the sense the court meant, and the decision stays with the judge in each case. The homologated cameras page looks up a decree number in the register.
The points licence
Every Italian licence starts with 20 points. Offences take points off according to the article 126-bis table, in the version in force since 12 April 2025: 3, 6 or 10 points for speeding, 5 for a phone in hand, 5 for a seat belt, 6 for a red light, 10 for alcohol over 0.5 g/l. For several offences recorded at the same time no more than 15 points go, unless one of them carries a suspension or revocation.
Points come back in two ways. Two years with no offence that takes points restore the balance to 20; drivers already on 20 earn a 2-point bonus every two years, up to 10 extra. A recovery course at a driving school gives back 6 points, 9 for professional licences. At zero the licence must be retaken: theory and driving test. The licence points and points deduction pages work out the balance after one or more offences.

Other common Italian fines
A phone in hand while driving costs €250 to €1,000, 5 points and a suspension of 15 days to 2 months, which rules out the discount. An unfastened seat belt costs €83 to €332 and 5 points. Parking on a pavement, crossing or cycle lane costs €87 to €344 for a car; in a disabled bay €330 to €990 and 4 points. Driving into a ZTL (limited traffic zone) without a permit costs €83 to €332, and each camera passage can be a separate fine. The Highway Code penalties page gathers every offence the site calculates.

Rental cars and foreign-registered vehicles
With a rental car the police first send the fine to the rental company, which names the driver and usually charges an administration fee on your card. The actual fine then comes to you, by post or registered letter, with its own 5-day and 60-day deadlines counted from the day you receive it. Do not confuse the two: the rental company’s charge is not the fine and does not pay it. For a car registered outside Italy the 360-day service period applies, and the fine is written in Italian, often with a translation.
2027 amounts
Article 195, paragraph 3 provides for fines to be updated every two years in line with the ISTAT price index. The 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026 updates were suspended, which is why the amounts are still those of 2019. The decree for fines applied from 1 January 2027 is due by 1 December 2026. The 2027 amounts are yet to be published: the site will add them on the day they are, without guessing.
Every amount on this page comes from the Highway Code text in force, read on Normattiva on 24 October 2026; every device count comes from the ministry’s register in its version of 22 February 2026. The method page explains each step of the calculation and its limits.
Frequently asked questions
How much is an Italian fine for a few km/h over?
If after the 5% reduction the speed is no more than 10 km/h over the limit, article 142 paragraph 7 sets €42 to €173 with no points. Paying within 5 days of service costs €29.40, plus the service costs printed on the fine. Between 10 pm and 7 am the amount rises by one third.
Is the speed on the fine already reduced by the tolerance?
Usually yes: the verbale shows the speed recorded by the device and the speed held, cut by 5% with a minimum of 5 km/h. The speed held decides the band and the amount. If your fine shows a single figure, check whether the reduction is mentioned: the calculator takes the recorded speed and removes the tolerance itself.
I live outside Italy: how long can they take to send the fine?
When the vehicle owner lives abroad, article 201 gives the police 360 days from the offence to serve the fine, instead of 90 for Italian residents. With a rental car the clock starts once the rental company has named the driver, so a fine can arrive many months after the trip and still be on time.
Can I pay the reduced amount from abroad?
Yes. The 30% discount applies within 5 days of service wherever you live, and the fine lists the bank details, often with an IBAN and a reference to quote. Bank transfers from abroad can take a day or two, so pay on the day you receive it. The discount is excluded when the offence carries a licence suspension.
Where can I see the speed cameras declared in a town?
In the national register published by the Italian transport ministry, which lists each device declared by each police body: make, model, approval or homologation decree and notes. The copy used here dates from 22 February 2026 and lists 3,896 devices; a location only appears when the body wrote it in the notes.
Will the amounts change in 2027?
Article 195 provides for an update every two years in line with ISTAT inflation. The updates for 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026 were suspended, so the amounts have not moved since 2019. The decree for fines applied from 1 January 2027 is due by 1 December 2026: the new amounts are yet to be published and will be added here on the day they are.
