Method and sources

The calculator applies legal texts, not averages: the Italian Highway Code (legislative decree 285 of 30 April 1992) and its Regulation (presidential decree 495 of 16 December 1992), in the text in force as reread on Normattiva on 24 October 2026, and legislative decree 150 of 2011 for appeals. Every amount, point and deadline comes from src/data/params-2026.json, which records for each value the article and a literal sentence from the text. No page types a figure by hand.

The speed held

The speed read by the device is cut by the reduction in article 345, paragraph 2, of the Regulation: 5%, with a minimum of 5 km/h. The result is not rounded. For an average speed worked out from motorway toll tickets (paragraph 3) the reduction is 5, 10 or 15% depending on the speed; the calculator offers it as a separate method. A tutor system times you between two gantries: the average speed is distance over time, then the same 5% reduction applies. Example: 72 km/h recorded on a 50 limit gives 67 km/h held, 17 over, €173 and 3 points; 145 km/h on a 130 limit gives 137.75 km/h and the first band, €42.

Bands, surcharges, repeat offences

The excess after the reduction picks one of the four paragraphs of article 142: 7 (up to 10 km/h), 8 (more than 10 and up to 40), 9 (more than 40 and up to 60), 9-bis (more than 60). The calculator shows the minimum and maximum of the paragraph. Between 10 pm and 7 am it multiplies by four thirds (article 195, paragraph 2-bis); for the heavy vehicles of paragraph 3 it doubles amounts and suspensions (paragraph 11); for a second paragraph 8 offence in a built-up area within a year it applies €220–€880 and a 15–30-day suspension. Example: 140 km/h at night on a 90 limit gives 133 km/h held, the paragraph 9 band and a €724.00 minimum, with no discount. A repeat within two years of paragraph 9 or 9-bis (8 to 18 months of suspension, or revocation) is described on the pages but does not enter the amount calculation.

Payment and deadlines

The 30% discount on the minimum applies within 5 days of service (article 202) and is excluded when the offence carries a licence suspension or confiscation. The minimum is due within 60 days. With neither payment nor appeal, the fine becomes enforceable for half the maximum (article 203, paragraph 3). Periods are counted in calendar days from the day after service: service within 90 days of the offence being established, 360 for owners living abroad (article 201); appeal to the prefetto within 60 days, to the giudice di pace within 30, or 60 from abroad. Example: offence on 1 October 2026, served on 20 October 2026: discount until 25 October 2026, minimum until 19 December 2026, giudice di pace until 19 November 2026. The calculator does not move deadlines that fall on a public holiday and says so in the result.

Points

Points come from the article 126-bis table in the text in force since 12 April 2025, read row by row (97 rows in src/data/tabella-punti.json). The calculator doubles points for licences held under three years, caps at 15 the points taken for offences recorded at the same time unless a suspension or revocation applies (paragraph 1-bis), shows the date on which two years without offences restore the balance to 20 (paragraph 5) and the effect of a 6-point course (paragraph 4). The starting balance is the one you enter: only the Portale dell’automobilista shows the official balance.

The speed-camera register

The register is the “Lista dispositivi di rilevamento della velocità” of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, published on velox.mit.gov.it since 28 November 2025 under directorial decree 367 of 29 September 2025. Content on the ministry’s site is released under the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Italy licence (legal notes of mit.gov.it); comuni come from the ISTAT list of codes, under CC BY 4.0. Source: MIT, CC BY 3.0 IT; ISTAT, CC BY 4.0.

Date of the copy. The ministry’s site does not answer requests from our server: the latest attempt, on 24 October 2026, timed out. The list page still shows as published in a web archive of 25 September 2026, but the latest complete copy of the data we found dates from 22 February 2026: Internet Archive, Wayback Machine, capture of 22 February 2026 (latest update from a police body on 21 February 2026). Every camera figure on the site therefore refers to that date, which is written next to it. No direct read of the register has ever succeeded. The planned weekly job retries the source and looks for a newer archived copy, but it runs on servers outside Italy, which the ministry does not answer: there is no guarantee the date will change, and until it does it stays as it is.

Content. The copy lists 3,896 devices. The script scripts/update-data.mjs matches each body to its comune by cadastral code (2,754 devices), by the body’s name when the code is missing (123) or to the province for provincial and metropolitan bodies (278); 606 Polizia Stradale devices and 116 from other bodies have no comune. The type (fixed, mobile, average speed) is read from the free text written by each body: 1,146 devices do not state it. A location only appears when the body wrote it in the notes. 27 devices are reported as withdrawn or not active.

The tests

The examples on this page, the band boundaries, the reduction at 100 km/h, the night surcharge, the discount excluded with a suspension, the 15-point cap, the deadlines and the average speed are tests (src/lib/engine/sanzioni.test.ts), rerun at every update. A failing test blocks publication. Each literal sentence in the parameters file is searched for in the text in force reread from Normattiva: if it is no longer there, the update stops and the amounts never change by themselves.

What the site does not do

  • It does not read your record: amounts and points are an estimate from what you enter; the fine you receive is binding.
  • It does not say whether a camera is homologated in the sense meant by the Court of Cassation: it shows the decree declared by the body.
  • It does not guess the 2027 amounts: the decree has not been published.
  • It sells no appeal service, advice or insurance and asks for no account, email or phone number.

Updates

A weekly job is planned that rereads the texts on Normattiva, retries the ministry register (so far without success, see above), rejects a register with fewer than 3,000 devices, reruns the tests, rebuilds and republishes the site. Texts last reread: 24 October 2026. An error reported to contatti@multeautovelox.it is checked against the source, fixed and turned into a test. See the editorial policy.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the speed-camera register copy not dated today?

The ministry site that publishes the list does not answer our requests: no direct read has ever succeeded, and the latest attempt, on 24 October 2026, timed out. The figures therefore come from the latest complete copy of the same file kept by the Internet Archive (Wayback Machine), dated 22 February 2026, and that date is shown next to every figure. The date does not change on its own: it will only change once a new read succeeds.

How does the site tell a fixed camera from a mobile or average-speed one?

The register has no field for the type: it is read from the free text each police body wrote in the type, model or notes columns. The script looks for words such as fixed site, laser, section or average speed. When the body wrote nothing useful the device stays unspecified: in the current copy that is 1,146 out of 3,896.

Can the calculator result be used as evidence in an appeal?

No. The calculation applies the articles of the Highway Code to the data you enter and helps you know what to expect, but it does not replace the fine notice, which is the only binding document. In an appeal what counts is the notice, the device paperwork and the rules quoted: the site says where to find them, it neither produces nor certifies them.
